Activities

As every parent and the parent guru knows, life is never easier than when children are absorbed in enjoyable activities. It pays dividends to be well prepared with all the necessary materials, and it is always best to make sure that everything is cleaned up and put away carefully in readiness for the next occasion. Children should be encouraged to help with the tidying up afterwards, and this will make your job easier too!

Messy Play

Play Dough Recipe - 2 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt, 2 cups of water, 2 tblsp cooking oil, 4 tsps cream of tartar, A few drops of food colouring. Method: Mix the dry ingredients in a saucepan, and then add the liquids gradually, whilst stirring. Stir continuously on a low heat until it forms a ball, and looses its stickiness. Turn onto surface and kneed until smooth. Note: If only using one colour, then it's easier to add the colouring when you add the liquids. But you may want to split the mixture at the end and make several different colours. You can store the play dough in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Clay - Make models and bake in the oven then paint and varnish them! You can use 1 part water and 1 part PVA glue.

Plasticine - Harder than play dough and gives your child a different texture to discover.

Spaghetti play - Cook up some spaghetti, colour with food colouring if you like, allow to cool and play!

Cornflour play - This is my absolute favourite; it's so relaxing and fun! Mix some cornflour with water until it's of a runny consistency, but it still hardens if you move the spoon quickly! Add colouring if required and pour onto on a tabletop! Use your fingers, or anything you like to play with it. Have fun with its strange consistency! If it gets on the floor wait until it's dry and then sweep/hoover it up.

Jelly play - This is just simply playing with some set jelly in your fingers.
